The Best Steakhouses in Alaska

Alaska has two steakhouses in this directory, both in Anchorage. In a state of 665,000 square miles — larger than Texas, California and Montana combined — that is the entire list, and we would rather say so than pad it.

Both of them

1. Simon & Seafort’s Saloon & Grill (Anchorage) — open since 1978 and known to everyone in the city simply as Simon’s. USDA Prime aged steaks and serious seafood, in a room with panoramic views over Cook Inlet toward Mount Susitna and the Alaska Range. It is the steak dinner in Alaska, and the view is not a consolation prize.
2. Sullivan’s Steakhouse (Anchorage) — the only national chain steakhouse in the state, downtown. Dependable, and exactly what it says.

Why two

Alaska has roughly one person per square mile and almost no road network by lower-48 standards. Anchorage holds about 40 percent of the state’s population, so anything that needs a city to survive is in Anchorage or it is nowhere.

Beef also arrives the hard way. There is very little cattle production in state, so Prime beef comes north by barge or plane — which is part of why a steak dinner in Anchorage is treated as an occasion rather than a default, and why Simon’s has been able to hold the position for nearly fifty years.

If you are visiting, this is a two-restaurant decision rather than a research project. Book Simon’s, ask for a window, and go at sunset — which in June means closer to midnight.
