The Best Steakhouses in North Dakota
North Dakota has one steakhouse in this directory. Not one worth recommending above the others — one, full stop. We would rather tell you that plainly than pad the page with supper clubs and casino buffets that do not belong on a list about steak.
The one
Harry’s Steakhouse (Grand Forks) opened in October 2021 on the corner of DeMers Avenue and Fifth Street downtown, owned by Hal and Kathleen Gershman. It is deliberately built as a period piece — a 1940s and 1950s American steakhouse, done straight rather than ironically.
It has been voted one of OpenTable’s Most Romantic Restaurants in the nation three years running, and in 2025 it was named North Dakota’s best steakhouse. A second location is planned for West Fargo.
Why there is only one
North Dakota has about 780,000 people across 70,000 square miles — roughly eleven people per square mile — and no metro area over 130,000. There is no national chain steakhouse anywhere in the state, a distinction it shares with Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, New Hampshire, West Virginia, Vermont and Maine. The brands never came, and the independent scene is thin.
That is not a knock on the state. It is cattle country — North Dakota runs well over a million head — but the beef mostly leaves, heading south and east to feedlots and packing plants. If you are driving through and want a proper steak dinner, Grand Forks is the stop. Otherwise Minnesota is three hours east and South Dakota four hours south.
