The Best Steakhouses in Vermont
Vermont has four steakhouses in this directory, in four different towns. That is the whole list, and we are not going to inflate it — Vermont is a state of 650,000 people whose food reputation was built on cheese, maple and farm-to-table cooking rather than on beef.
What it does have is no national chain steakhouse anywhere in the state — a distinction Vermont shares with only Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, New Hampshire, West Virginia, Maine and North Dakota. All four rooms below are independent.

- E.B. Strong’s Prime Steakhouse (Burlington) — Vermont’s first USDA Prime steakhouse, on Church Street in a historic downtown building, owned by Tim and Kristin Halvorson. If you eat one steak in the state, eat it here.
- The Windjammer (South Burlington) — family owned and operated since 1977, on Williston Road, with the Upper Deck Pub attached. Steaks, prime rib and seafood, and the room Vermonters have been marking occasions in for nearly fifty years.
- Southside Steakhouse (Rutland) — the anchor for central Vermont and the Killington side of the state.
- Black Rock Steakhouse (Springfield) — down in the southeast corner near the Connecticut River, and the only serious steak for a long way in any direction.
Why the list is short
This is not an oversight. Vermont has fewer people than the city of Boston, no metro area over 45,000, and a restaurant culture that went in a different direction — toward dairy, cider, maple and the farm-to-table movement that Vermont arguably invented. Steakhouses are a function of density and expense accounts, and Vermont has neither.
The upside is that the four rooms above have no chain competition at all, and two of them have been doing it for decades. New York is two hours west and Boston three hours southeast if you want more choice than this.
