What Brann’s does
The Caledonia location is one of seven Brann’s in Michigan, serving a small town southeast of Grand Rapids that does not have many other options for a real steak dinner. That is most of the appeal — it is a neighborhood steakhouse in a place that needs one.
The sizzler
The dish to order is the one the family built the business on. A marinated sirloin comes off the grill onto a hot platter and reaches the table still cooking, which is why they call it Michigan’s Original Sizzle. The Brann family has been feeding West Michigan since 1938, and this preparation dates to the first John Brann’s Steakhouse in Grand Rapids around 1960.
It comes in 6, 8 and 11 ounce weights, so it scales to whatever kind of night it is. Two signature sides and the house yeast rolls are included, which is increasingly rare.
The beef
Specialty-sourced USDA Choice Angus, aged and cut to what the menu calls the family’s traditional specifications for over sixty years. Choice, not Prime — and the menu is upfront about it, which matters more than the grade itself.
Beyond the sizzler there is a 16oz bone-in Kansas City strip, prime rib in two sizes and a 7oz filet mignon. Any steak can be finished with Kentucky bourbon sauce, Cajun spice or Boursin cheese sauce, or topped with baked shrimp or a slab of ribs.
Menu prices
