Inside the Amway Grand Plaza

This location is on the ground floor of the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel at 187 Monroe Avenue NW, the landmark hotel on the Grand River and the closest thing downtown Grand Rapids has to a front door. Van Andel Arena and DeVos Place are both a short walk, which makes this a convention and pre-event room as much as a destination one.

Hotel steakhouses tend to run long hours and hold a table better than free-standing rooms do, and that is a real advantage on a night when downtown is full.

What the kitchen does

The whole system is built around one piece of equipment: a broiler running at 1,800°F. USDA Prime beef, hand-cut and custom-aged, goes in and comes out seared hard on the outside without the middle catching up. It is finished on a 500°F plate with butter, which is the sizzle every table in the room recognizes.

The 26oz Cowboy Ribeye is the bone-in showpiece. The 19oz bone-in New York strip is the one the company’s own menu names as its preference, and it is the better steak of the two. Sides come à la carte and family style.
