Why Lucia’s made the SteakMap list

Lucia’s is a Canton Italian kitchen with a steak program sitting inside it, and the beef is treated seriously enough to earn a place here rather than serving as a courtesy line on the menu.

The give-away is the sizing. Both the filet mignon and the Boston strip are offered in two portions — a Petite and a Large filet, a Small and a Large Boston strip — which is a butchery decision rather than a menu-writing one. There is also a bone-in ribeye, the cut most likely to be dropped by a kitchen that is not committed to beef, since it takes the longest to cook and the most skill to get right.

The Boston strip

Worth noting the name: Boston strip is an older regional term for what most American menus now call a New York strip or a strip loin. Seeing it written that way is a small marker of a kitchen that has been doing this a while and has not rewritten its menu to match everyone else’s.

What to expect

Steaks come with Lucia’s signature garlic butter. There is a steakhouse salad built on grilled filet mignon over mixed greens with fresh-cut fries, which is the correct way to make a steak salad and a good lunch order. The rest of the menu runs house-made meatballs, Italian wedding soup, and the full complement of dressings including a proper crumbled roquefort.

You can add a lobster tail to any dinner at market price.
