Why Marina 27 made the SteakMap list

Marina 27 sits on Lake Lotawana, about half an hour southeast of Kansas City, and it is not what a lakeside restaurant usually turns out to be. The beef is Prime, the cuts are specified, and the board tops out at a 44oz tomahawk ribeye — larger than anything else SteakMap has recorded in Missouri.

The burger is made with Braveheart beef, a black Angus program, and named on the menu. Bothering to name the beef in a burger at a marina restaurant tells you where the kitchen’s attention is.

The Captain’s Cuts

The core board is short and all Prime: a 22oz Prime cowboy ribeye, an 8oz Prime filet mignon and a 14oz Prime Kansas City strip. The KC strip is the right cut to find on a Missouri menu, and the kitchen recommends adding a cognac peppercorn sauce to it.

There is also a Kona-crusted 24oz T-bone — coffee-crusted beef, which sounds like a gimmick and is not; coffee grounds char into a bitter-sweet crust that suits a big, fatty cut. The same Kona treatment goes on a Berkshire pork porterhouse served over julienne vegetables with balsamic.

Surf and turf, taken seriously

Given the setting, the seafood pairings are the thing to order. The Filet Oscar puts lobster claw meat, a blue crab and lobster cake, béarnaise and asparagus over an 8oz Prime filet. The Admiral Filet takes the same cut with smoky bleu cheese and gorgonzola sauce and grilled colossal shrimp. Or you can add half a pound of broiled lobster tail, king crab, or ahi sashimi to any steak.

The lobster bisque is described on the menu as award-winning and comes with claw meat in the bowl.
