Stoney River is an upscale chain built around hand-cut steaks, and the Troy location sits at 155 West Big Beaver near Columbia Center — the same corridor that holds Ruth’s Chris and Eddie V’s. Three national steakhouses inside two miles is a fair measure of how much corporate dining Oakland County generates.

The steaks

Hand-cut is the claim worth caring about here. It means the kitchen portions its own steaks rather than receiving them pre-cut and vacuum-sealed, which gives more control over thickness and trim. Alongside the beef there is fresh seafood, signature salads and a set of house specialties.

Stoney River positions itself a step below the fine-dining chophouses on price while keeping white-tablecloth service, and that is a real and useful slot to occupy.
