What Brann’s does
Brann’s is a West Michigan institution rather than a fine-dining room, and it earns its place on this list on one dish: the sizzler.
The family calls it Michigan’s Original Sizzle. John Brann Sr. opened the first John Brann’s Steakhouse in Grand Rapids around 1960, and the marinated sirloin he sent out on a hot platter became the thing the region drove across town for. At its peak the original restaurant was moving roughly 800 sizzling steak dinners on a single Saturday night, which is a genuinely startling number for one kitchen.
The Grandville location
This one sits in Grandville, southwest of Grand Rapids near the RiverTown Crossings corridor — a straightforward, busy family location rather than a special-occasion room. It is one of seven Brann’s in Michigan.
The beef
Brann’s serves specialty-sourced USDA Choice Angus, aged and cut to what the menu describes as the family’s traditional specifications, unchanged for more than sixty years. Choice rather than Prime, and the menu says so plainly. Every steak arrives with two signature sides and the house yeast rolls.
The sizzler comes in three weights, and there is a bone-in Kansas City strip and prime rib for anyone who wants a bigger cut. You can finish any of them with Kentucky bourbon sauce, Cajun spice or Boursin.
Menu prices
From the Brann’s menu, August 2026: Sizzler steak 6oz $17.99, 8oz $18.99, 11oz $21.99; 8oz prime rib $21.99; 16oz bone-in KC strip $29.99; 12oz prime rib $29.99; 7oz filet mignon $39.99. Brann’s notes prices and availability vary between locations.
