Why Café Pacific made the SteakMap list

It opened in 1980 and has been serving the same neighborhood for more than forty years without reinventing itself once. In a city that rebuilds its restaurant scene every few seasons, that is the achievement.

Café Pacific leads with seafood — the name is not decorative — but it keeps a serious steak list alongside it, and the two have equal standing on the menu rather than one being an afterthought.

The room

The dining room is dark mahogany, marble, etched glass and polished brass, which is exactly what a 1980 fine-dining room looked like and exactly what it still is. It has not been stripped back to concrete and filament bulbs, and the regulars would riot if it were.

The service is the other half of the reputation: a genuinely veteran floor staff, many of them there for decades, and complimentary valet.

Highland Park Village

The restaurant sits at 24 Highland Park Village, at Preston Road and Mockingbird Lane. Highland Park Village was the first planned shopping center in America built with its shops facing inward, and it is now among the most expensive retail addresses in the country. Café Pacific is its dining room, and has been for two generations of Park Cities families.
