Why the Pine Club made the SteakMap list

The Pine Club has been broiling steaks on Brown Street since 1947, in its original room, and the menu still carries a line that tells you most of what you need to know about the place: “A fine steak can not be as tender and good when broiled well to medium-well done.” That is not a disclaimer. It is a house position, printed on the menu, and it has not softened in nearly eighty years.

What earns the room a place on this list is the cutting. Steaks are sold in stated weights and in pairs of sizes — a 12oz strip-loin or a 16oz Extra Heavy, an 8oz filet or a 10oz, and a 14oz bone-in filet for people who want the bone doing its work. A menu built that way reflects a butchery decision rather than a marketing one.

The cuts

The bone-in rib eye is 20oz and the porterhouse 18oz. For a table of two there are two shared cuts that most modern steakhouses have quietly dropped: a 24oz “Double” strip-loin and a 36oz “Double” porterhouse, each sold as dinner for two.

What to expect

Dinner arrives with the room’s own set pieces — stewed tomatoes or the vegetable of the day, baked potato or french fries, and the house bread and salt sticks. The stewed tomatoes in particular date the kitchen honestly; almost nobody serves them anymore.

Beyond beef the menu keeps calves liver with sautéed onions, tenderloin tips with fresh mushrooms and gravy, broiled lobster tails, and a surf and turf pairing a filet with a whole lobster tail.

The shared cuts run $102.95 for the 24oz Double strip-loin and $110.95 for the 36oz Double porterhouse.
